Much of this region of the sky is invisible to astronomers in the Northern Hemisphere; not until the construction of large telescopes in the Southern Hemisphere (in such places as Chile and Australia) was detailed scientific study possible.
Puppis A, the strongest radio source in the constellation Puppis, was first studied in depth in the 1950s, when it was identified as an unusual region of nebulosity coincident with a strong radio source. At this time, few optical components of radio sources had been identified. It took several years
